Broadband evolution, types and features

The term broadband refers to a telecommunication bandwidth that is at least 256 Kbps. A single broadband communication channel is 6 MHz wide and the voice grade is greater than 20 KHz. Broadband uses a wide range of frequencies to seamlessly transmit and receive information between networks. Broadband offers more speed than a traditional dial up internet connection because data and information can be multiplexed and transmitted on different communication frequencies and channels.

Many years of ground breaking research, effort and patience contributed to the invention of broadband in the new millennium. Standards, technical specifications and protocols were put in place by international unions and major telecom companies throughout the world started offering broadband services at 256 Kbps to home consumers, institutions and business enterprises. In a short span of twelve years the broadband speeds have gone from a meager 256 Kbps to an incredible 10 Mbps. Broadband has tremendously enhanced the growth of the world wide web and consumer applications, scripts and enterprise software are becoming more available to the public.

There are five different types of broadband connections. They are DSL broadband, cable broadband, wireless broadband, satellite broadband and power line broadband. DSL is the abbreviation for Digital Subscriber Lines. DSL is a wired broadband technology that effortlessly relays and receives data and information over conventional telephone lines. Since everyone has a landline at home, DSL is easy to install and it can provide transmission speeds of up to 1 Mbps. Airtel provides DSL services. The speed of the DSL connection varies depending on the quality of the telephone line and the distance of the telecom company from your home.

There are four different types of DSL. They are ADSL, SDSL, HDSL and VDSL. ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Subscribers Line. ADSL technology is developed primarily for the residential market and for people who download more information than upload. ADSL gives more speeds in the downlink and very low speeds for the uplink without affecting the regular voice calls in the telephone. SDSL is the acronym for Symmetrical Digital Subscribers Line. SDSL is used by corporates and business people for value added services like web conferencing that requires rich bandwidth. HDSL means High data rate Digital Subscribers Line. VDSL stands for Very high data rate Digital Subscribers Line. Both these technologies are used by corporates for special and advanced bandwidth requirements.

Cable modem is a broadband technology that enables television operators to provide internet connectivity using coaxial cables. You don’t need to dial up your internet service provider and this connection is always on. Hathway provides broadband using cable modem. Wireless broadband is based on the 4G technology that uses a radio link to connect the consumer to the internet service provider. They use long range directional devices to seamlessly transmit and receive information between routers. Tikona Digital Networks provides 4G wireless broadband services. Satellite broadband uses orbiting satellites to relay and receive information in sparsely populated cities. Power lines are recently used to provide broadband connectivity using the electric power distribution network. Broadband is an amazing telecommunications technology that has changed the internet landscape and promises a bright future for net enthusiasts.

3G cellular standards and characteristics

The concept of 3G cellular standards or IMT-2000 began in the early 1980’s at the International Telecommunication Union. After fifteen years of research and development, hard work, patience and persistence, the 3G standard was born. The technical specifications and the blueprint was approved and made public. 3G uses the communication spectrum between 500 MHz and 3 GHz to seamless transmit and receive information between cell towers. All national and international telecommunications along with the Government unanimously approved the 3G standard.

Consumer applications, enterprise applications and value added services can be developed based on a single protocol. 3G technology is the result of ground breaking development work carried out by international telecommunication unions like 3GPP, 3GPP2, ITU-R, ITU-T and UWCC. Complete interoperability and networking was achieved successfully. Convergence in multiple services including cellular phones, landlines, voice and video can be distributed using 3G technology.

Consumers will be able to travel internationally thanks to the effortless global roaming features that can be deployed using 3G systems. 3G can deliver mind blowing speeds of up to 2 Mbps. 3G is technically 100 times faster than the earlier 2G technology. There are six important features or characteristics of 3G systems. They are compatibility, flexibility, affordability, modular design, high data rates and security. 3G is compatible with existing GSM technologies like 2G and EDGE. 2G continues to be prevalent in underdeveloped, developing and third world countries like India, Brazil, China, Africa and Russia. 3G is capable of giving compatibility to this existing technology through effortless migration paths.

3G is also flexible unlike existing GSM systems. 3G can support multiple platforms, multiple interfaces and multiple protocols. A telecommunication giant in a foreign country need not worry about mergers and acquisitions anymore. 3G addresses this problem effortlessly by providing a flexible interface to support a wide range of devices and applications. 3G supports CDMA, FDMA and TDMA. CDMA stands for Carrier Division Multiple Access. FDMA is the abbreviation for Frequency Division Multiple Access and

TDMA refers to Time Division Multiple access. 3G systems are priced attractively. It is not expensive and these services can be easily bought by consumers, small businesses and educational institutions. 3G is also designed in such a way that it can be expanded in the near future. 3G networks are also more secure compared to existing GSM technologies. 3G networks uses a new block cipher for authentication thereby making it safe and secure.

4G standards that lack cooperative relaying

4G is a telecommunication standard for providing high speed broadband services. The whole world may be crazy about 4G but these standards lack cooperative relaying. If a mobile phone is connected to two or more mobile towers during a phone call it is known as soft handover or cooperative relaying. If there is cooperative relaying it is possible for a mobile phone to receive communication signals from two or more radio stations at the same time. Tikona Digital Networks is an amazing startup that offers cooperative relaying .Given below is a list of 4G standards that lack cooperative relaying.

1) UMB

UMB is the abbreviation for Ultra Mobile Broadband. This communication standard was developed by Qualcomm. UMB was developed on the TCP-IP protocol and uses radio systems to transmit and receive information from one mobile phone tower to another. UMB features frequency division duplex, IP network architecture, mixed cell sizes and scalable bandwidths. UMB supports a wide variety of topologies and offers scalable bandwidths. Its adaptive interference management features gives more user data rates and it provides amazing download speeds of up to 250 Mega bits per second.

2) IEEE 802.20

This 4G standard was developed by the International Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Two important standards fall into this category. MBWA and iBurst fall into this category. MBWA stands for Mobile Broadband Wireless Access. MBWA was published in the year 2008 by IEEE. MBWA offers speeds of up to 80 Mega bits per second. MBWA utilizes packet switching architecture and supports low bit rates. iBurst is a technology developed by the company Arraycomm. iBurst was developed in the year 2000 and adopted by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions. Both these systems lack cooperative relaying.

3) OFDM

OFDM stands for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. OFDM encodes data on different carrier frequencies to deliver incredible speeds of up to 300 Mega bits per second. OFDM is used by telecommunication giants like Tikona digital networks and has become very popular worldwide. OFDM is highly sensitive to Doppler shifts and can create frequency synchronization issues within the network.

All these 4G standards lack cooperative relaying. However there are some exciting new 4G standards like LTE advanced and IEEE 802.16 that incorporates cooperative relaying. A soft-handover is a very important required for wireless broadband networks and the telecommunication companies and educational institutions should spend more money, time and research on developing 4G standards that has cooperative relaying features. 4G is an incredible broadband standard but it does lack some key features.
